EFT – Emotional Freedom Technique is a modality/forum of energy work that uses light tapping on acupressure points around the face and upper body to help release trapped emotions and limiting beliefs in the body.
I have been using EFT for myself and in my practice for over 10 years and have experienced many ways how this modality can be beneficial for many issues in one’s life. When I first learned about EFT a client actually told me about it. Maybe a week later, I was watching Good Morning America and they were interviewing a guy that wrote a book on EFT. I might be a little superstitious, but when something comes to me from a few miscellaneous different sources, I take notice and investigate a little deeper.
Does EFT Really Work?
My main attraction to EFT was it’s claim that it would help to reduce the fear of heights. I figured if it actually does what it says it can do, I’ll pursue it further. At the time, we were doing a lot of hiking, so I had the perfect opportunity to test things out.
Just to give you an idea of my fear of heights. I’m fine with being close enough to the edge of a cliff to look at the distant scenery, as long as there’s 10 or so feet of space between me and the edge. If my wife or kids ventured closer to the edge than my boundary it would drive me nuts, super stressful and ruining the whole hiking experience for me.
Recalling my fear, in mind, I would think of all the scenarios of what could or might happen if I got closer to the edge. I could trip, slip, faint, get dizzy, wobbly, lose strength, shake, panic, freeze up, and the list went on and on. With my family all these thoughts were going through my mind for them, as well as the sheer anxiety of not knowing what I would do if they did fall, then I would really be forced to get closer to the edge.
Giving it a try.
I wrote down every possible scenario that I could recall or think of, even if it was too far fetched, but I wanted to cover every possibility. I rated everything on the list and started with the scenarios that scarred me the most and worked my way through the list, which took a few days.
After completing, the next weekend it was time to test it out. The hike we chose actually had a gradual increase of a cliff’s edge. The 5 foot cliff normally wasn’t all that intense, and on this day there were no haunting feelings that emerged. Moving from 5 feet to 10 feet, still no uneasiness surfaced. Due to some obstacles in the landscape, we were forced to hike away from the cliff for a while. When we were able to return the cliff was hundreds of feet high.
I slowly walked up to the edge of the cliff, I seriously went to the edge. Looked around and then looked down the cliff side. The view was amazing, and I stood there in awe for several minutes, digesting all the beauty.
As I stood there, in my head I was actually trying to recall some of the old feelings and emotions that were once stopping me from standing where I was standing right then, but nothing came up. I do have to say though, it’s a weird feeling knowing that I was once scared to stand this close to the cliff’s edge and now I had no emotional charge of that fear.
I’m sold, time to study more and integrate it into my practice.
After reading several books, attending a seminar and practicing a lot, I felt comfortable about including EFT in my services.
When I first introduced it to my practice, I would mix EFT and some Neuro-Linguistic Programming – NLP (another forum/modality of energy work) together to make some really powerful shifts or changes.
I was telling Nancy, one of my clients about my fear of heights issue and my amazing experience with EFT. She told me that she had similar fears and would love to give it a try. After her session she told me about her experience and wrote a testimony about it.
I was amazed at the healing I experienced during a brief ‘EFT tapping’ session with Wil. I have been deathly afraid of heights since I was a child and within ten minutes of work with Wil, I can now stand and enjoy the view at the edge of a cliff with no fear whatsoever. This was truly a miracle. Wil also taught me how to do this for myself so I can address other issues I have and resolve them.

Nancy also was able to release more than her fear of heights during this session. She also had some table top fears that were released as well. Table top fears are fears that have the same intensity as the fear we were working on. Do keep in mind, we only worked on fear of heights, and the other two fears weren’t even mentioned at all before or during the session.
Earlier in the year Nancy had taken a pretty nasty fall on her bike. After she healed physically enough that she could ride again she did want to get back on her bike. She would even tell me that she wanted go for a bike ride, but for some reason she couldn’t bring herself to do it.
After the EFT session, and many days later, she told me that the fear of riding her bike was no longer there and a second bonus, her fear of public speaking went away as well. Even though her experience of the table top fears release is an exception, it still shows you how powerful Emotional Freedom Technique and energy work can be.
